In a sign of an improving economic environment and growing preference for rail to move goods between the U.S. and Mexico, U.S.-Mexico cross-border trade by rail, measured in value terms, hit an all-time high in September. It rose 16.4 percent year-over-year to $6.25 billion, according to the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Cross-border truck trade also climbed, rising 7.7 percent year-over-year to $27.2 billion, a record for the month.

U.S. cross-border traffic with Mexico via truck and rail jumped 8.1 percent in July 2013, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Both imports and exports via these modes of surface transportation were up year-over-year for the first time since April.

Journal of Commerce Economist Mario Moreno upgraded his forecast for the eastbound trans-Pacific lane to 3 percent growth to a total of 13.1 million TEUs. Better-than-expected traffic in the first quarter was the major driver in the upgrade — issued in the June report of Container Shipping Outlook — from the forecast of 2 percent growth made at the TPM conference in Long Beach in March. “China was the region’s best performer sending 4.9 percent more volume or nearly double the four-quarter moving average rate of growth to U.S. ports than in the same period last year,” he said.
