RAILS ORDERED TO PAY US FOR OVERCHARGES

The Interstate Commerce Commission ordered 14 railroads to pay the U.S. Departments of Energy and Defense nearly $10 million in damages, interest and reparations for overcharges.

The ICC determined that the railroads owe the two departments reparations of $6.295 million, plus interest of $3.668 million. The railroads must pay the departments by Feb. 29.The payments are for overcharges in connection with the railroads' movements of spent fuel from nuclear submarines between November 1975 and November 1978.

The formal order on Friday follows the ICC's vote on this matter at a hearing last September.
