Higher Union Pacific peak surcharges aimed at improving service

Union Pacific has doubled surcharges on rail shippers tendering excess freight out of Los Angeles. The railroad wants to carefully control volume because it believes that will lead to good service. Shippers can view this as a natural high point in pricing or shop around for a truck to see if the rate is competitive.
