LONG BEACH, Calif. — Jurisdictional disputes between dockworkers and other waterfront unions in the U.S. will intensify in the coming years as technology and automation eliminate some traditional jobs, but also create new jobs maintaining and repairing sophisticated new machines, a machinist union executive told the JOC’s TPM conference this week in Long Beach.

Container traffic at West Coast ports declined 3 percent in October compared to the same month last year. Imports were down 4 percent and exports dropped 2 percent.

North American west coast container ports experienced a slight increase in year-over-year traffic in the third quarter of 2013. Overall throughput to major west coast ports in the U.S., Mexico and Canada rose 1.7 percent from 6,176,870 20-foot-equivalent containers in third quarter 2012 to 6,283,238 TEUs in third quarter 2013.
