NORTH BERGEN, NJ –(January 9, 2014) - Harold J. Daggett, President, International Longshoremen’s Association, AFL-CIO has been named to two Executive Council Committees with the American Federation of Labor, Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO). ILA President Daggett was elected to the AFL-CIO Executive Council in September 2013, and now will serve on two important Executive committees.

AFL-CIO President Richard L. Trumka informed the ILA leader that he would be serving on the AFL-CIO’s Executive Council Committees on Legislation/Policy and International Affairs.

“I am honored to expand my service to the AFL-CIO by my appointment to these two important committees,” said ILA President Daggett. “The International Affairs Committee can help the ILA as we expand our role and influence with Maritime unions around the world. Coupled with our involvement and affiliations with the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) and International Dockers’ Council (IDC), the ILA is well positioned to strengthen and enforce our contracts and help other unions to likewise.”

The ILA and its membership know the importance of issues such as Homeland Security, port maintenance, transportation and labor policy, national health care and Social Security. The ILA leader can best protect ILA’s interest with these and other issues as a member of the AFL-CIO’s Legislative/Policy committee.

These two committees will meet in February 2014 when the AFL-CIO holds Executive Council Winter Meetings in Houston, Texas.

“It’s vital for our members and our union that we will have a voice in International Affairs and National Legislative Policy,” added Mr. Daggett. “I thank AFL-CIO President Trumka for giving our union that voice.”
