Barcelona’s Container Traffic Falls 12 Percent

Spain’s Port of Barcelona reported total container traffic in January was 126,835 20-foot-equivalent units, including 10,480 domestic TEUs and 116,356 foreign TEUs, a decline of 12 percent year-over-year.

Unloaded traffic in January fell 6.5 percent year-over-year from 74,044 TEUs in 2012 to 69,201 TEUs in 2013. Loaded traffic slumped 17.7 percent from 70,055 TEUs to 57,635 TEUs.

Full containers accounted for 99,747 TEUs in January, dropping 5.2 percent from 105,180 full TEUs in January 2012. Empty containers accounted for 27,089 TEUs, plummeting 30.4 percent from 38,919 TEUs. Empty containers were 21.4 percent of total traffic in January 2013, while empty containers were 27.0 percent of total traffic in January 2012. Transit cargo was 22.6 percent of total traffic in January 2013, compared with 30.0 percent in January 2012.
