THE NAMING OF TYPHOONS

Vietnam wants to give typhoons a clearly Asian identity, Reuters reports.

The nation has suggested several names for the powerful storms to an international typhoon committee. Not for Vietnam the kind of common monickers given to typhoons' Western-hemisphere counterparts, hurricanes - names like Floyd and Hugo and Donna that belie their power and destructiveness. No, on the Asian side of the International Dateline it would be far preferable to call the storms something like Landing Dragon or Black River, Vietnam says.

Such names would be far more accurate descriptions, too.
