WCI Shows Slight Rise in Eastbound Atlantic, Pacific Rates

Backhaul trans-Pacific and Asia-Europe container rates were largely unchanged this week, according to the weekly indices issued by the World Container Index.

Trans-Pacific westbound rates on the Los Angeles-to-Shanghai route were unchanged at $841 per 40-foot container. Eastbound Asia-Europe rates on the Rotterdam-to-Shanghai route were $964 per 40-foot container, up from $952 per 40-foot container as week ago. The Rotterdam-Shanghai rates have been quite stable in recent months, hitting a high of $1,026 in early August, 6 percent higher than the current level. Since then, they have fluctuated in a narrow range between those two levels.

In the trans-Pacific westbound trade, levels have been gradually easing in recent months from a level of $909 per 40-foot container in July, 8 percent higher than the current level.

In the trans-Atlantic trade, Rotterdam-to-New York rates were unchanged this week at $2,379 per 40-foot container, while New York-to-Rotterdam rates were $1,916 per 40-foot container, up from $1,881 last week.
