Mississippi River Rock Blasting to Begin Dec. 18

The Army Corps of Engineers has announced that on Dec. 18 it will begin blasting and removing rock pinnacles at Thebes, Ill., located south of St. Louis on the Mississippi River, to prevent the Mississippi’s water levels from reaching critical lows that threaten barge transportation.

The corps also recently started to release water from reservoirs on the Kaskaskia River, south of St. Louis, to support navigation over the rock pinnacles and areas in need of dredging on the Mississippi, which should reach the area where the rock pinnacle work is being done by Dec. 24, providing an additional six inches of depth.
