SAN FRANCISCO CORPS GETS AWARDS

The San Francisco district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers received two awards in a 1989 nationwide competition among corps projects.

The district received the award of merit for engineering for its Fisherman's Wharf breakwater project. The breakwater was built to protect San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf area from dangerous waves coming in from the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay. It is intended to provide a basis for re-establishing a commercial fishing fleet.The environmental award of merit was given for the district's sand stabilization and vegetation program at the Buhne Point Shoreline Demonstration Project at the entrance to northern California's Humbolt Bay.
