R.G. HERBERT, MARITIME HISTORIAN, DIES

Robert G. Herbert, a maritime historian and World War II merchant marine veteran, died Friday at age 85.

Mr. Herbert was chairman of the Battle of the Atlantic Historical Society, an organization that commemorates World War II's longest and most bitterly contested battle.While working for naval architects Gibbs & Cox, he helped design some features of the World War II Liberty ships, including an anti-torpedo protection device that saved lives of many Allied merchant mariners.

He is survived by two children, three grandchildren and one great- grandchild.
