New box record for Savannah

The Georgia Ports Authority announced that it handled a record 390,936 TEUs through the Port of Savannah during the first three months fiscal 2004, up 10.6 percent, or 37,395 TEUs from the same period a year ago.

"Last year, the Port of Savannah experienced more than 30 percent growth in TEUs," said Doug Marchand, executive director of the GPA. "We are very pleased to announce that we are surpassing the successes of last year."

The GPA recorded growth in the July-September period in total tonnage, 8.9 percent; total breakbulk tonnage, 1.7 percent; total bulk tonnage, 25.9 percent, and total container tonnage, 10.1 percent.
