NAVY CHRISTENS SURVEILLANCE SHIP

The Navy christened its first undersea surveillance ship with a special twin- hull design.

The Victorious has a Swath, or small waterplane area twin hull design, that provides "excellent stability," especially in rough seas, said the Military Sealift Command.The ship is the platform and transportation for a passive undersea surveillance system, Surtass, the Sealift Command said.

The Victorious will tow an array of underwater listening devices and carry the electronic equipment required to transmit data to shore stations via satellite for evaluation.

The Victorious was christened at McDermott Shipyard, Amelia, La., May 5.
