The Navy has awarded Newport News Shipbuilding a $30 million contract to begin design work on "a new nuclear attack sub," according to the chairman of a congressional committee.

In a hearing Thursday on the Seawolf submarine and its billion- dollar computer system, Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., chairman of the House Government Operations Committee, revealed the Navy awarded the contract April 23.Rep. Conyers asked surprised Navy officials: "Is this a follow-on or replacement for the Seawolf?"

Gerald A. Cann, assistant secretary of the Navy in charge of research, development and acquisition, said he was unaware of any contract to design a new sub.
