MARAD OKS BARGE SALE

TO SAUDI COMPANYGlobal Marine Drilling Co., Houston, received Maritime Administration approval to sell the 4,831-ton barge Glomar High Island VI to Arabian Drilling Co. of Damman, Saudi Arabia.

The barge, built 11 years ago, will be transferred to Saudi Arabian registry.

Marad also received a request from Zidell Inc., Portland, Ore., to sell and transfer to Canadian registry the cargo barge ZB 250. The prospective buyer is Pacific Towing Services Ltd., Vancouver, British Columbia.

MARAD SELLS 5 VESSELS

READY FOR SCRAP HEAP

WASHINGTON - The Maritime Administration accepted offers from four companies to buy five obsolete vessels for scrapping in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Taiwan or China.

Mini Shipping and Trading Co., of Fort Lee, N.J., paid $325,000 for the Biddle, a hopper dredge, and $350,000 for the Purdue Victory, a cargo vessel.

Space International Trading Inc. bid $951,000 for the tanker Aucilla, Neptune International Inc. offered $584,887 for the auxiliary repair vessel West Milton and Anil F. Sharma offered $131,310 for the research vessel Eltanin.

Marad sold the vessels on an "as is, where is" basis.

CARRIER TRADE GROUP

ELECTS HVIDE CHAIRMAN

WASHINGTON - J. Erik Hvide, president and chief operating officer of Hvide Shipping Inc., was elected the 1992 chairman of the board of the American Institute of Merchant Shipping, a carrier trade association.

Mr. Hvide joined Hvide Shipping in 1974 and assumed his present position in 1981.

AIMS also elected board members and officers at its annual membership meeting in Long Beach, Calif., last month.

Ernest J. Corrado was re-elected president. Joseph J. Cox was re-elected vice president and Roseann A. Pazak was re-elected secretary-treasurer.

BUYS TRAINING SHIP

NEW YORK - State University of New York Maritime College has acquired a coastal tanker from the Navy to train industry personnel and students in loading and unloading liquid cargo.

Plans call for equipping the former Navy tanker with gauging equipment from various manufacturers, fixed and portable tank washing systems, and a vapor recovery system.
