Kozo Watanabe, Japan's minister of international trade and industry, told reporters he favors lowering Japanese interest rates.

"It's my view that it would be better to have the rates lower," a ministry official quoted Mr. Watanabe as saying. He said Mr. Watanabe made the comment responding to a reporter's question about whether a stronger yen would make it easier for the government to lower interest rates.

Mr. Watanabe said that encouraging expansion of Japanese domestic demand is important because of Japan's role in the world economy.
