St. Lawrence Seaway's Cargo Traffic Rises 11 Percent

The Saint Lawrence Seaway handled 5.1 million metric tons (about 5.6 million tons) of cargo shipments in November, increasing 11 percent year-over-year.

Continuing demand for iron ore, coal and general cargo from the industrial and manufacturing sectors lifted the tonnage numbers, according to Marine Delivers.

For the period from March 22 to Nov. 30, cargo shipments were 34.6 million metric tons, up 3 percent from the same period in 2011.

The 3 percent rise is partially because of a 12 percent increase in steel imports in November and rising grain exports from Canada and the U.S., said Rebecca Spruill, Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation’s director of trade development.
