Shanghai export average spot rates for the following trade lanes are among the 15 component trade lanes in the weekly SCFI-Containerized Freight Index,produced by the Shanghai Shipping Exchange and weigh 57.5 percent of the SCFI comprehensive reading.

Index surge: The Shanghai Container Freight Index comprehensive reading for Jan. 11 was 1,232.05 up 83.97 points or 7.3 percent from the week before. The index was 251 points or 25.6 percent higher than a year ago.

To U.S. WEST COAST base ports*
Spot surge: The Jan. 11 U.S. West Coast base port average spot rate was $2,341 per FEU, $120 or 5.4 percent more than the week before. The index was $519 or 28.5 percent higher than a year ago.

Spot surge: The Jan. 11 North Europe base port average spot rate was $1,418 per TEU, $148 or 11.7 percent above the week before. The spot rate was $685 or 93.5 percent higher than a year ago but only $186 or 15.1 percent above the Oct. 16, 2009, base rate.

To MEDITERRANEAN base ports*
Spot spike: The Jan. 11 Mediterranean base port average spot rate was $1,356 per TEU, $198 or 17.1 percent more than the week before. The spot rate was $584 or 75.6 percent more than the same week last year, but only $77 or 6 percent above the base rate of Oct. 16, 2009.
