HAITI-BOUND VESSEL FLEES EMBARGO FLEET

A ship bound for Haiti fled from members of the international embargo fleet trying to inspect its cargo but the motives were unclear, U.S. Navy officers said Wednesday.

According to a press pool traveling with the fleet of U.S. and Canadian ships enforcing the U.N. arms and oil embargo on Haiti, the ship was stopped Tuesday night. The embargo is designed to pressure the Haitian military to restore toppled President Jean- Bertrand Aristide.

A Coast Guard team boarded the ship after it was stopped but could not see its cargo hold. The vessel was ordered to go to a friendly port in the Dominican Republic or the Bahamas for inspection. Instead, it sailed away.
