FORMER ILWU CHIEF, HARRY BRIDGES, DIES

Harry Bridges, former president of the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union, who helped set the stage for the modern labor movement, died Friday. He was 88.

Mr. Bridges died of emphysema at his San Francisco home, said Danny Beagle, spokesman for the longshoremen's union.Mr. Bridges led the ILWU from 1934 through 1977.
