Corps reconsidering S. Carolina box site

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plan to review a site as an alternative for a new South Carolina State Ports Authority container terminal even though state and local officials already ruled it out.

Daniel Island is one of five alternatives that will be considered in an environmental study of an authority plan to expand at the former Charleston Naval Base.

Earlier opposition from the public and some lawmakers prompted the state's General Assembly to steer port expansion from Daniel Island to the old base.

Corps officials told the Associated Press that they are simply following federal law to review alternatives that don't consider political factors.
