Top carriers serving US trades see share shrink

A ZIM ship.

Zim’s import volume rocketed 35.1 percent year over year to 446,676 TEU, while the Haifa-based carrier’s export volume jumped 21.1 percent to 200,381 TEU. Pacific International Lines (PIL) almost matched Zim’s import growth, with volume up 30.3 percent to 177,352 TEU through August, while export volume at PIL rose 3.4 percent to 28,386 TEU. The market share of the Top 5 ocean carriers serving the US trades slipped through the first eight months of the year, with Zim Integrated Shipping Services and Pacific International Lines (PIL) winning the most cargo.

The Top 5 carriers’ share of the US import trade slipped 0.3 points year over year to 58.2 percent from January to August, while their share of the US export trade dropped 0.7 points to 58.6 percent, according to data from PIERS, a sister product of JOC.com.

The decline in market share among the Top 5 carriers was driven by Ocean Network Express’s (ONE’s) operational issues following the April merger of “K” Line, MOL, and NYK Line.

Import volume at ONE through August fell 5.4 percent to 1.8 million TEU, while export volume fell 26 percent year over year to 747,786 TEU. The declines were attributed to delays in booking reception and documentation operations “because ONE staff were not completely familiarized with the newly introduced IT system, and the staff were shorthanded,” the company said in its most recent earnings statement.

“This caused significant inconvenience for customers,” the carrier said, adding that “issues such as the staff’s skill level and personnel shortages have already been addressed, and their operations have returned to normal.”

Zim, PIL post strong import growth

While other Top 5 carriers recorded strong growth, notably Maersk Group’s 12.1 percent gain in import volume to 2 million TEU and Hapag-Lloyd’s 16 percent increase in export volume to 780,765 TEU, that growth pales compared with that of Zim.

Zim’s import volume rocketed 35.1 percent year over year to 446,676 TEU, while the Haifa-based carrier’s export volume jumped 21.1 percent to 200,381 TEU. PIL almost matched Zim’s import growth, with volume up 30.3 percent to 177,352 TEU through August, while export volume at PIL rose 3.4 percent to 28,386 TEU.

Total US import volume rose 4.7 percent to 15.8 million TEU in the January-August period, while total US export volume rose 2.4 percent to 8.5 million TEU. Import growth slowed from 6.8 percent in the same period of 2017, while export growth accelerated from 1.9 percent.

Increasing US trade with the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East, and Africa is driving the import growth. US imports from the subcontinent rose 9.3 percent through August to 648,964 TEU, while US imports from the Middle East and Africa grew 9.8 percent to 178,353 TEU.

US exports to Indian subcontinent surge

Export growth has been driven by a 32.2 percent surge in volume to the Indian subcontinent to 503,715 TEU, as US exporters of recyclables crack open new markets following mainland China’s ban on more waste imports. The ban weighed on US exports to Asia, which fell 2.2 percent to 4 million TEU. A close look at US exports to Asia shows that volume to northeast Asia, which includes mainland China, fell 11.1 percent to 3 million TEU, while exports to southeast Asia surged 35 percent to 1.1 million TEU.

The strong US import volumes, particularly from Asia, have been beneficial for container lines, as spot rates have remained elevated throughout the peak season, with year-over-year gains rising steadily since April as fears of tariffs led shippers to rush imports to the US. The Oct. 22 Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) spot rate reading to the US West Coast was up 71 percent from the same period last year, and rates have held steady at a time that peak-season pressure on the spot market typically starts to ease.

Other strong performers in the US import trade were OOCL, whose volume rose 13.6 percent to 886,719 TEU; Seaboard Marine, with volume up 12.6 percent to 154,263 TEU; and TOTE Maritime, where volume rose 12.3 percent to 30,736 TEU.

Among the Top 10 carriers, Hapag-Lloyd’s 16 percent increase in export volume was followed by a 15.1 percent surge at Cosco Shipping to 442,495 TEU and an 11 percent increase in Maersk Group volume to 1.3 million TEU.
