Privately owned Mediterranean Shipping Co. (MSC), the world’s second-largest shipping line, was founded in 1970. MSC currently operates more than 500 vessels, annually carrying some 20 million TEUs of cargo on some 200 routes to about 500 ports of call. It employs nearly 50,000 people in nearly 500 offices worldwide.

Over the first nine months of 2018, MSC was the third-ranked container carrier, with respect to total U.S containerized import trade, with volume of 2,175,000 TEUs, up 3.1 percent year-over-year, for a market share of 12.1 percent. Over the same period, MSC ranked second in terms of U.S containerized export trade, with volume of 1,250,000 TEUs, up 4 percent, year-over-year, for a market share of 13.1 percent.
