Consolidation has shaken up JOC's rankings of the top carriers in US trade lanes.

The five largest carriers in the US import and export trades continue to tighten their grip on the container shipping market as industry consolidation gave them a larger share of US container volumes in the first half of this year, a trend likely to accelerate.

The concentration is more pronounced in US imports, where the top five carriers increased their combined market share by 1.9 percentage points from the first half of 2016, to 51.3 percent, while boosting their share of the US export market 0.7 percentage points to 49.8 percent, according to PIERS, a sister product of JOC.com.

The same carriers make up both the top five in US imports and exports: Mediterranean Shipping Co., CMA CGM/APL, Maersk Line, Hapag-Lloyd/United Arab Shipping Co., and Evergreen Line.

All of them posted year-over-year gains in imports in the first six months of the year, with MSC leading the way, with growth of 15.7 percent to 1.4 million TEU, followed by Evergreen at 11.8 percent to 897,981 TEU. Evergreen led the pack on the export leg, with volume up 19.4 percent to 423,690 TEU, followed by MSC at 3.1 percent to 816,204 TEU. Maersk Line and Hapag-Lloyd reported volume declines, with export traffic down 0.7 and 1.6 percent to 586,897 TEU and 525,889 TEU, respectively.

Currently in the process of merging container operations, Japan’s Big Three carriers — 'K' Line, MOL, and NYK Line — would have led import growth in the first half, with a combined rate of 17.1 percent to 1.4 million TEU. Export volume at the three Japanese carriers also grew, rising 8 percent to 742,694 TEU. Ocean Network Express (ONE), as the merged entity will be called, would have controlled 12.9 percent of the import market and 12 percent of the export market. That would have made ONE No. 1 in terms of import market share, and tied it for second place with CMA CGM/APL for export market share. Were ONE already operating, Evergreen would have been bumped from the top five import and export rankings.

This is the first of JOC’s container carrier rankings that does not include Hanjin Shipping, which collapsed on Aug. 31, 2016. At the time, Hanjin was No. 7 for US imports, with a share of 5.2 percent, and No. 8 for exports, with a share of 3.8 percent.

Hanjin’s exit and the continuing consolidation of the largest players in the shipping industry has allowed new entrants to make the Top 40 ranking. The most noteworthy new entrant on the export side is United Abaco Shipping, which went from roughly 500 TEU in the first half of 2016 to more than 5,000 TEU this year. World Direct Shipping’s more than doubling of TEU volume from the first half of 2015 to this year’s first half, to more than 5,800 TEU, makes it a standout for imports.

With consolidation set to continue, these rankings are in for more changes. Maersk is particularly notable because of its deal to acquire Hamburg Süd. The acquisition is on track now that Maersk has sold Brazilian cabotage carrier Mercosul Line to CMA CGM to satisfy Brazilian competition authorities.

Cosco Shipping is another company to watch, given its deal to acquire OOCL for $6.3 billion. Although both deals will increase the market concentration of the top five carriers in the US container trade, the Cosco-OOCL merger will have a profound impact, as OOCL is a Top 10 carrier for both imports and exports, coming in at No. 7 on imports and No. 6 on exports. Hamburg Süd is No. 13 for imports and No. 12 for exports.
