BOAT MAKER TRYING TO SELL IDLE PLANT IN INDIANA

Outboard Marine Corp. is looking for a buyer for its Chris-Craft boat plant here.

Outboard Marine originally planned to hold on to the 110,000-square-foot plant and its 15 acres of property so it could expand production quickly, but then decided the boat business wouldn't rebound any time soon. Operations just shut down.Waukegan, Ill.-based Outboard Marine notified Chris-Craft employees 60 days ago that the plant would be closing. Most of the 180 employees have applied for jobs at other fiberglass boat and recreational vehicle operations in the area.

Work at the plant will be transferred to the Outboard Marine fiberglass boat plant in Cadillac, Mich.

Outboard Marine has spoken to several area boat and recreational vehicle manufacturers about the plant, where Chris-Craft built fiberglass powerboats used for pulling water skiers.

At least one local corporate executive said he was interested in the plant, but felt it was too expensive.

Outboard Marine acquired the Chris-Craft plant in Goshen in the late 1980s when Outboard Marine bought several formerly independent boat-building companies.
