JAPAN QUESTIONS US TRADE DATA

The Bank of Japan is not confident that the smaller U.S. merchandise trade deficit for March signals a continued reduction in the trade gap, although a closer examination of the March figures confirms the decrease from a month earlier, a bank official said Wednesday.

He said the U.S. trade deficit of $9.7 billion in March ought to be considered a deficit of $11.2 billion in light of a carry-over of $800 million

from February and nearly $700 million in gold exports to Taiwan.
