JAPAN TO IMPORT 193,000 TONS OF RICE

Japan will import 193,000 metric tons of rice for processed food this year as an emergency measure to deal with an expected poor rice harvest, Japan's food agency was quoted as saying Tuesday by Kyodo News Agency.

The imports will consist of 160,000 metric tons of non-glutinous rice and 33,000 of glutinous rice, agency officials said. There is widespread speculation Japan will import a total of 450,000 metric tons of rice - 400,000 of non-glutinous rice and 50,000 of glutinous - in the January-March quarter.
