ITALY'S PRODUCER PRICE INDEX UP 0.4 PERCENT ON MONTH, 9.2 PERCENT ON YEAR

Italy's producer price index rose 0.4 percent in June from May and climbed at an annual rate of 9.2 percent, national statistics institute Istat said.

Istat also said the wholesale price index rose by a monthly 0.8 percent in June and rose 12.4 percent compared with June 1994.In May, the PPI rose by a monthly 1.1 percent and an annual 9.0 percent while the WPI rose 0.6 percent on the month and by an annual 11.4 percent.

Istat said month-on-month producer prices in June represented a slowdown in the rises recorded at the start of the year, while the year-on-year figure was continuing to increase, but at a slower rate.

Most economists had been forecasting rises of 0.5 percent or 0.6 percent monthly and between 9.3 percent and 9.5 percent annually.

Finished consumer goods in the PPI rose 0.2 percent in June from May and rose an annual 5.8 percent. Investment goods rose a monthly 0.3 percent and an annual 5.0 percent, while intermediate goods rose 0.4 percent on the month and climbed an annual 11.7 percent.

The largest monthly PPI rise was in the other products category (up 0.9 percent). Above-average monthly increases were also recorded in the ferrous and non-ferrous metals category (up 0.7 percent), in the non-metallic products and minerals category (up 0.5 percent), and in the vehicles and vehicle components category (up 0.4 percent).

Monthly decreases were recorded in the energy products sector (down 0.2 percent).
