BERKLEY POSTS RISE

IN 2ND-QUARTER PROFIT

GREENWICH, Conn. - W.R. Berkley Corp., holding company for a group of property/casualty insurers, reported an increase in second-quarter net income, to $12.6 million, or 76 cents a share, from $8.4 million, or 48 cents a share, during the comparable 1994 period.

For the first six months of 1995, net income nearly doubled, to $23.4 million, or $1.40 a share, from $12.6 million, or 73 cents a share, during the corresponding 1994 period.

The company said the 1994 results had been affected by the company's share of losses incurred by subsidiary Signet Star Holdings Inc. due to the Northridge earthquake in California last January.

Total revenue during the second quarter of 1995 rose, to $247.4 million

from $215.2 million for the period in 1994.

Revenue also increased, to $476.4 million from $401.5 million in the first six months of last year.

The company's combined ratio worsened, to 102.3 percent from 101.9 percent for the second quarter, but improved for the six-months, to 101.9 percent from 105.5 percent in 1994.
