INDIA'S INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION UP 14.2 PERCENT ON YEAR IN APRIL-MAY

India's industrial production index rose 14.2 percent in April-May from a year earlier, the government's Central Statistical Organization said Wednesday.

In April-May 1994, the index was up 7.4 percent from a year earlier, the Press Trust of India said.April-May are the first two months of the Indian fiscal year.

As of May, the industrial production index stood at 256.3, up 13.5 percent from a year earlier.

CSO also released the following details for April-May:

* The manufacturing sector grew 14.7 percent, compared with 8.3 percent in the earlier year period.

* Within the manufacturing sector, the capital goods segment grew by 23.9 percent, compared with 16.8 percent growth in the earlier-year period.

* The mining sector grew by 14.4 percent, compared with 2.4 percent a year earlier.

The electricity sector grew by 11.5 percent, compared with 7.0 percent a year ago.
