INDIA TO MOVE GAS OIL VIA CONTAINERS

Oil companies here will start using containers to speed up the domestic transport of gas oil, a Petroleum Ministry statement said.

The containers can move on rail, road and water transport, enabling the quick movement of gas oil from refineries and ports.Such a mode of transport will cut down the journey time and transit losses because there will be no need to off-load, and then load the gas oil on a different mode of transport.

At present, the gas oil usually is loaded on railway tankers from the refineries and ports. It is off-loaded at railway junctions, and then loaded again on road tankers en route to retail points.

The decision to use containers was prompted by a severe shortage of gas oil in northern India between April and June. The shortage lingered partly due to the inadequate availability of railway tankers.
