ORLANDO, Fla., Feb. 22, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) Logistics Conference -- Descartes Systems Group (TSX:DSG) (Nasdaq:DSGX), a federated global logistics network, announced that Gunther Mele, a leading supplier of brand-building packaging solutions to North America's retail industry, has deployed Descartes' Transportation Management solution to help it process and manage its outbound courier & less-than-truckload (LTL) shipments.

Gunther Mele selected Descartes' Pick, Pack and Ship application to provide a single, automated transportation management solution that could integrate with the organization's existing freight management business rules and processes. The application has helped automate and standardize Gunther Mele's shipping process for their LTL and courier shipments, reducing the need for manual calculations and eliminating manual processes such as handwritten bills of lading and/or waybills. This automation has helped reduce errors and identified savings with freight costs as well as improving labor efficiencies.

The solution has also allowed staff to focus on other areas of the business and helped provide a better customer service experience by enabling real-time updates on shipment status for customers.

Descartes' Transportation Management solution has enabled us to improve overall efficiency and eliminate human errors when it comes to freight and shipment calculations. The solution has helped us take a very manual process and automated our shipping process, freeing up our resources to focus on other areas of our business, said Ken Saeckl, Chief Operating Officer at Gunther Mele. In addition, the Descartes team delivered a thorough and complete implementation which ensured that our process and system requirements were achieved.

Standardizing and automating the shipment process for Gunther Mele has delivered metrics-focused results for their operations, said Joe Mallozzi, Vice President of Transportation Management at Descartes. Our goal at Descartes is to help our customers improve the overall productivity and performance of their operations quickly.

Part of Descartes' Transportation Management solution, the Pick, Pack and Ship application, provides functionality that enables supply chain management including order planning, radio frequency (RF) picking, pack verification, returns management, warehouse management and domestic and international shipping for logistics-intensive organizations.
