FBI DRUG PROBE LEADS TO PEACH BOTTOM ARRESTS

The FBI arrested three workers at the Peach Bottom nuclear plant for unspecified illegal drug activities, according to the plant's owners.

Philadelphia Electric Co. said the arrests were part of an ongoing investigation of drug use at Peach Bottom. The company said the three employees were involved in illegal drug activities prior to 1987. Also, the U.S. District Court in Philadelphia indicted a fourth Peach Bottom employee who previously had been suspended by the company with intent to dismiss for drug-related activities.

The FBI investigation resulted from a request made by PE in October 1986 for assistance in eliminating drug activities at Peach Bottom, the company said.

Peach Bottom has been shut down since March 1987 after federal inspectors discovered that the plant's operators were routinely sleeping on duty and playing computer games. Charges of mismanagement at Peach Bottom has lead Philadelphia Electric to replace most of its top nuclear executives.
