6,400-TEU container vessel is a lot of different things to shipping people: an asset that must be managed carefully; a mega-ship that requires planning, investment and plenty of effort to build, accommodate and load and unload.

But what does a 6,400-TEU ship mean to the public? Former Maritime Administrator Warren G. Leback got out his calculator the other day and came up with one answer.Lined up end to end, the 40-foot containers carried by such a vessel would stetch more than 24 miles. Add the tractors that haul the boxes ashore, and the line would grow to nearly 40 miles.

That's an eye-opening picture of a lot of cargo capacity.
