Former Lucent exec to head Homeland Security R&D

WASHINGTON - Dr. David Bolka has been named as the first director of the Homeland Security Advanced Research Projects Agency for the Office of Science and Technology at the Department of Homeland Security.

Bolka will play a critical role in developing changes in technologies that promote homeland security; to advance those technologies which are "critical," and to "accelerate the prototyping and deployment of technologies" that reduce homeland vulnerabilities, the DHS said.

Bolka, a retired Navy veteran, worked as a vice president in several areas for Lucent Technologies, and also worked for AT&T Corp.'s Bell Laboratories and the Naval Sea Systems Command.

Bolka's office is the external research funding arm for the Department of Homeland Security.
