EU’s Deficit Almost $140 Billion in 2012

The 27-member European Union recorded a deficit of 104.6 euros (about US$139.8 billion) in 2012, compared with a $217.4 billion deficit in 2011, according to Eurostat.

The 17-member eurozone recorded a goods surplus of about $109.3 billion, compared with a $21.0 billion deficit in 2011.

The first estimate for the 17-member eurozone goods trade balance in December 2012 showed a $15.6 billion surplus, compared with a $10.7 billion surplus in December 2011. Compared with November, seasonally adjusted exports in December fell by 1.8 percent and imports by 3.0 percent.

The first estimate for all 27 members of the EU’s goods trade balance in December was a $0.9 billion deficit, compared with a $0.3 billion deficit in December 2011. In December, compared with November, seasonally adjusted exports decreased by 1.9 percent and imports by 1.6 percent.
