THE ECONOMY STATE JOBLESS CLAIMS DOWN IN LATEST WEEK

New claims for state unemployment insurance benefits were made by 295,000 people during the week ended April 30, down 20,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis from the previous week, the U.S. Labor Department said.

Initial claims were up 28,000 in the week ended April 23 to a seasonally adjusted 315,000, Labor said.In the week ended April 23, 2.069 million people were reported claiming unemployment benefits under regular state programs, down 21,000 from the previous week's 2.090 million, Labor said.

The rate of insured unemployment during the week ended April 23 stood at 2.1 percent, unchanged from the previous week.

New claims during the four weeks ended April 30 averaged 302,750 a week, up from 302,500 for the four weeks ended April 23.
