DANGEROUS CROSSINGS

Texas and California top the list of states with the most dangerous road intersections, according to a survey by an insurance company.

State Farm Insurance came up with the list, saying that one-third of all automobile crashes occur at intersections. The company said it hoped greater public attention would spur improvements to the intersections and to drivers' behavior at them.Texas and California each had three of the nation's top 10 dangerous road junctions - in Addison, Plano and Dallas in the Lone Star State and Beverly Hills, Huntington Beach and Sacramento in the Golden State. Rounding out the list were Schaumburg, Ill.; Clearwater, Fla.; Las Vegas; and Chesterfield, Mich. The number of accidents estimated for each of the top 10 sites last year ranged from 204 to 263.

Officials in Addison protested that their intersection - of Belt Line and Midway roads - had experienced no fatal accidents and few serious crashes. Local police, however, pointed out to the Associated Press that the site was where two six-lane roads crossed. ''It's hard for people to get going fast enough to do any real harm,'' police said.
