(Jacksonville, Fla.; Nov. 29, 2010) - Crowley Maritime Corporation recently awarded two scholarships to deserving students at the University of Washington's Michael G. Foster School of Business. The students - Rene Elamparo and Senait Chrisostomo - were chosen for their academic achievements, ambitious business goals and financial need. Elamparo and Chrisostomo's recognition is in keeping with Crowley's commitment to education and fostering future community and business leaders. Each year dozens of students with diverse stories are awarded Crowley scholarships. Elamparo and Chrisostomo are no different.

A first generation Filipino, Elamparo's parents immigrated to the United States and at a young age instilled in him the importance of education and what it helps build a successful life. Now a senior marketing and information systems major at UW, Elamparo is focused on pursuing a career in management consulting. I am just one step away from fulfilling my dreams and goals, and I would like to thank Crowley for contributing to my prolonging quest, Elamparo said. The successful completion of my education is a stepping stone to a world where I may someday help others similarly. Chrisostomo, a junior marketing and international business major, is also an exemplary student, participating in a study-abroad and exchange student program in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and internships with large, international companies, while also working at the UW Women's Center. She plans to minor in Spanish and pursue a master's degree in business administration. She is also a member of the Association of Black Business Students. I greatly appreciate Crowley's support of my academic career and my interests in studying abroad, Chrisostomo said. Thanks to your decision, the financial burdens from my study abroad experience to Buenos Aires, Argentina, have been lifted.... and will allow me to participate in another study-abroad program in South America. Crowley scholarships are part of Crowley's lengthy and ongoing commitment to education.

Over the years, Crowley Chairman, President and CEO, Tom Crowley Jr., has directed the company to present scholarship dollars to deserving students at the maritime academies and other select institutions in the United States, Caribbean and Central America in the name of his father Thomas B. Crowley Sr., who guided the company to extraordinary heights before passing away in 1994. Since 1984, Crowley has provided more than half-a-million dollars in scholarship funding for more than 200 students studying at maritime academies and other select institutions. In 2006, the program expanded to Central America and to date has provided financial assistance to more approximately 20 students in that region. Founded in 1861 by a private gift of 10 acres in what is now the heart of downtown Seattle, the UW is one of the oldest public universities on the West Coast. As the state's flagship university, the UW serves more students than any other institution in the Northwest - more than 92,000 annually. For more information, visit www.washington.edu.
