UMWA FILES PETITION

AGAINST COLOMBIAThe United Mine Workers of America said Thursday it filed a petition to suspend Colombia's U.S. trade benefits for acts in violation of labor rights.

The U.S. coal labor group's action stems from a recently ended strike at the El Cerrejon mine, a joint venture of the Colombian government and Exxon Corp.

Richard Trumka, president of the United Mine Workers, charged that actions taken by the Colombian government to halt the labor dispute made a "mockery of workers' rights to strike and take collective action in Colombia."

Mr. Trumka asked that Colombia be denied tariff breaks under the Generalized System of Preferences.
