Voters to Decide

Well Waste Issue

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A proposal to prohibit injection of toxic wastes into deep wells in Kern County will be placed voters at the June primary.

The initiative, sponsored by the Kern County Toxics Coalition, also would ban any new hazardous waste facilities until 90 days after the county completes a new hazardous-waste management plan.

One proposal affected by the ballot measure would be a deep well injection project proposed by TSD Systems Corp. near Blackwells Corner in northwest Kern County.

The Kern County Board of Supervisors has postponed action on all hazardous-waste disposal projects pending adoption of a new hazardous waste management plan, which could be ready this fall.
