BNSF BEGINS PINE BLUFF-LITTLE ROCK SERVICE

Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Co. began direct service between Pine Bluff and Little Rock, Ark.

The step allows the carrier to operate its own trains over tracks owned by Union Pacific Railroad under the terms of an agreement between the two carriers.Until BNSF began its own service, the carrier had to rely on a haulage agreement under which UP's trains carried freight that was marketed by BNSF.

Local service is provided in Little Rock for BNSF by the Little Rock & Western Railway, a short-line carrier.

BNSF is offering service six days a week on the route. The Little Rock-Pine Bluff route was part of a package that gave BNSF more than 4,000 miles of trackage rights on UP.

Since that agreement became effective in September 1996, BNSF began its own service on several routes, including lines radiating from Houston to New Orleans and Memphis.
