AMERITECH AGREES TO BUY LEP UNIT

Ameritech Corp. is seeking to expand its holdings in the security monitoring business by buying National Guardian Corp. from British freight company LEP Group PLC.

Financial terms were not disclosed.Ameritech, the Chicago-based regional Bell company for five Midwestern states, said National Guardian, a provider of security and protection services, had 1994 revenue of $213 million. The company, with headquarters in Greenwich, Conn., serves about 275,000 customers throughout the United States.

In December, Ameritech acquired Securitylink of Oak Brook, Ill., which serves more than 44,000 customers in the metropolitan areas of Chicago; Cleveland; Columbus, Ohio; Indianapolis; Philadelphia; and Washington.

Ameritech said the new agreement with LEP is contingent on regulatory approval by Sept. 25.
