ALCOA UNIT TO SUPPLY BUMPERS FOR TOYOTA

Aluminum Co. of America said Tuesday it will supply lightweight aluminum bumpers for the new Toyota Avalon beginning in the 1995 model year - the first order by Toyota with a North American aluminum producer.

Terms were not disclosed.Alcoa said the bumpers it will provide Toyota weigh 8.5 pounds each, compared with steel bumpers that can weigh as much as 20 pounds.

It said the bumpers will be made in Delhi, La., by Alcoa's Tifton Aluminum subsidiary, and supplied to Toyota's assembly plant at Georgetown, Ky., which currently builds Camrys.

The Toyota plant is being expanded to assemble the new model. Alcoa said the design of the bumpers was completed over the past 18 months by Alcoa and Toyota designers and engineers in Japan and the United States.
