U.S. bans Peru airline over safety issues

Peru's biggest airline, Aero Continente, is temporarily banned from flying to and from the United States, the Transport Ministry said on Thursday, citing a decision by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Peru's Transport Ministry announced the ban in a statement but neither it nor the FAA gave reasons for it. Reports said the ban was related to safety issues.

The company, which runs four Miami-Lima flights a week and has 60 percent of Peru's domestic market, insisted it met all FAA requirements to fly in the United States and would continue to fly by hiring U.S.-registered planes. Miami is the airline's only U.S. destination.
