Northwest puts domestic services on portal

Northwest Airlines Cargo has added two domestic shipping products to its menu of services available through online exchange Cargo Portal Services.

The move allows forwarders to book and track Northwest's standard domestic two-day freight and VIP small-package services via the CPS Web site at

"We're expecting a pop in bookings," said Jim Friedel, president of Northwest Cargo. The standard service offers low-priced transportation for deferred shipments over 150 pounds, whether in containers or loose. while the VIP service provides same-day delivery for packages weighing less than 100 pounds.

"Our U.S.-based forwarders have told us that they like the convenience of CPS, and that they want to use it for all of their transactions with us," Friedel said.

The portal was developed by Unisys in conjunction with Northwest and the cargo divisions of United Airlines and Air Canada.

Northwest's domestic flight-specific service was already available on the site, while its two international services - Select 100 for express shipments and Select 300 for standard shipments - have been accessible since CPS went live in late January.

Separately, Friedel said CPS expects to announce by July 21 that a fourth carrier has made its flights available through the portal. That carrier is currently testing the service. Its flights will be accessible within a week after the announcement.
