Japanese International Air Cargo Soars

International cargo climbed 24.3 percent for Japan Airlines and 66.5 percent for All Nippon Airways in February, according to figures released by the two biggest Japanese air carriers. The large double-digit February gains compare with extremely low levels posted a year earlier amid the deep global economic crisis.

After falling for 15 months in a row, JAL's international cargo volume grew for the fourth consecutive month in February on a year-on-year basis to 42,135 tons. The year-on-year pace of growth slowed from 32.9 percent in January.

During the first 11 months of fiscal 2009, which started in April 2009, JAL transported a total of 540,113 tons of cargo on international routes, down 7.9 percent from the same period of the previous fiscal year.

ANA's international cargo volume grew for the sixth consecutive month in February on a year-on-year basis to 30,658 tons. ANA's international cargo volume began its upturn in September after declining for 11 consecutive months.

During the latest 11 months from April 1, 2009, through the end of February, ANA transported a total of 341,137 tons of cargo on international routes, up 13.2 percent from the same period of the previous fiscal year.

The surge comes too late for JAL’s cargo business. The bankrupt airline will stop operating freighter flights at the end of October this year and use only the belly space of its passenger flights for air cargo.

JAL’s domestic volume fell 0.2 percent in February to 32,553 tons, the slowest rate of decline in the last 11 months. During the April-February period, JAL transported a total of 429,481 tons of cargo on domestic routes, down 7.4 percent from a year earlier.

ANA's domestic cargo volume grew for the second straight month in February on a year-on-year basis, rising 2.3 percent to 33,854 tons. During the April-February period, ANA transported a total of 414.876 tons of cargo on domestic routes, down 1.9 percent from a year earlier.
