The Shanghai Export Air Freight Index, as reported by Drewry, fell roughly 7 percent year-over-year in June. This drop followed double-digit year-over-year declines in March, April and May.
The index is based on the average of all-in rates (U.S. dollars per kilogram) for cargoes of 100-499 kg, 500-999 kg, and more than 1,000 kg from Shanghai to London, Moscow, Prague, New York, and Los Angeles. In June, the average air freight rate was $3.39 per kilogram.
The index stood at 83.9 in June, inching down 0.5 percent or four-tenths of a point from May’s index of 84.3. In June 2012, the index sat at 90.1.
June 2013's rate benchmark was the lowest since August 2012, when it slipped to 82.1. Since January, the index level is down 7.4 percent.
