HACTL to open Shenzhen air-cargo hub

Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Ltd. said it will open its first Air Cargo Consolidation Center (ACCC) in the Futian Free Trade Zone in Shenzhen.

The facility, to be operated through HACTL's wholly-owned subsidiary Hong Kong Air Cargo Industry Services Ltd. and in partnership with the Hong Kong Airport Authority, will be located little more than a mile from the Lok Ma Chau border crossing in Hong Kong.

The air-cargo handler, the largest in Hong Kong, also said it is considering a joint venture holding company with the Airport Authority to develop cargo services in China.

Phase 1 of the new operation is slated to start in mid-October, and will provide bulk cargo acceptance and consolidated cross-border delivery to HACTL's SuperTerminal 1 at Hong Kong International Airport.

Phase 2, targeted for launch in 2004, will cover pre-packed cargo acceptance and consolidation at the ACCC and direct trucking service to SuperTerminal 1 for export.

"The ACCC concept is to improve efficiency for exporters and cargo agents who need time-assured reliability, and to enhance connectivity within the HKIA catchment area," said Summit Chan, director of corporate development at HACTL, in a statement.
