AFRICA TRANSPORTATION SUMMIT

Transportation Secretary Rodney E. Slater will host a three-day conference with transportation ministers from Africa that begins Monday evening in Atlanta.

The agenda includes the status of Africa's transportation system, financing the continent's transportation infrastructure, enhancing transportation safety and security, transportation technology and information networks, safe skies and liberalized aviation. The conference is designed to foster Africa's economic growth and competitiveness by developing an efficient and integrated transportation infrastructure development. More than 400 people, including government officials and business executives, are expected to attend.

Hopefully, they will make some real progress. Efficient transportation is critical to improving trade and economic development. While much of Asia and Latin America have achieved tremendous progress in the past two decades, Africa has by and large been left behind. The people of Africa deserve better.
